Back in the year 2000, when my kids were smaller (and
less opinionated) they were involved in a lot of different fundraisers.
Between school, after school clubs, homework, school concerts, the
fundraisers felt anything but "fun".
I was getting to a point in my life where I wanted to
do more and contribute something positive to the world. I decided starting with my kids'
school by going to the next Parent Teacher Organization meeting and to let
them know that
you can only sell and eat SO much candy, no matter how good it is. And, as
for the wrapping paper, yes, it is wonderful and beautiful and totally
addicting to the point of wanting to wrap things that don't even need
wrapping. But, I thought there must be something that the school could sell
that would help raise awareness of something and providing people product/s
that are useful at a decent price and still make some money for the
school.
After going to a Parent Teacher Organization at my
kids' school and after bringing up the idea of coming up with a fundraiser
that did the above, I was nominated as the person to come back to
the next meeting with some ideas to be considered. Hmmm, okay, I can handle
that. I have a background in selling almost every imaginable product:
Tupperware, Avon, Herbalife, Melaleuca, Mary Kay (which I still dabble in
for the fun and camaraderie with other women), as well as trying my hand at
Pampered Chef, and a few others that have slipped my mind. I am sure if I
asked my husband, he would be happy to remind me of how good of a customer
we were to all of those businesses as well as remind me of the ones that I
have forgotten. :)
After looking into several products and fundraising
ideas, first aid kits came up as something that are necessary and that
always needed to be replenished and/or replaced, as well as the fact they
would promote safety and be profitable. Well, the profitability was where I
was
having a problem. I couldn't find a company that would personalize a
small number of first aid kits (less than 500) and make them at a price that
we could mark up and still make money. I called on a friend I had met in the
glove importing business to get some information. He said sure... he could make me a "deal"
on some first aid kits. I
thought "Great!". I got some numbers from him and was able to put together a
flyer for us to review at the next Parent Teacher Meeting. It was decided at
that meeting that we could go ahead with the first aid kit fundraiser and
that I would be in charge of running the fundraiser. Sometimes the squeaky
wheel gets the work, not the grease. :)
Needless to say that after I had gone through the time
and energy to come up with it I thought, hey, maybe this would help other
schools or organizations and why can't we come up with a standard grouping
of kits, but also do custom kits when necessary, and cater to the niche
market of little leagues and cheerleaders and other sports and organizations
that needed to raise money, wanted to have their name on something, and
didn't want to have to order a certain number until after they had collected
the money. That was when the idea for By Dezign Products was born.
Some things have changed over the past few years. We
have opted to manufacture our own kits to get the quality items in our kits
at affordable prices. We wanted to have scissors that were metal and that
actually cut (we didn't think that was unreasonable). We didn't want to use
plastic tweezers either (has anyone ever gotten them to actually work?- Let
me know). We wanted conforming gauze bandage, not the regular gauze that
made wrapping an extremity more of a test of patience and skill than most
are interested in ever attempting. The other thing we wanted to get rid of
ASAP was any use of latex gloves in our kits. Even our spill kits are made
with vinyl or nitrile gloves and instead of the type of wiper that most
spill kit companies use (those brown paper towels that you find in
washrooms) we use disposable washcloths for wipers. It costs a little more
to make, but we know that when you are cleaning up a hazardous spill you
will appreciate that we did not scrimp on the towel portion of your spill
kits. We also think that our spill kits are priced more affordably than most
of the "other" guys spill kits. Let us know what you think.
The awesome thing about the medical and the first aid industry is
that it is an ever
changing field with new technology literally happening overnight. It has been exciting staying on top of the new blood
stopping products out there. The new bandages that allow our men and
women in the military and in law enforcement to patch themselves up right on
the field, and now we can offer this same technology to be used by the rest
of us, is truly amazing. The new Celox (pronounced cell-locks) blood
stopping granules are a work of science art and also started first with
using it with our military. Our BurnAid products from Rye
Pharmaceuticals, that we
chose to use in our kits and to sell separately on our website as well, uses no lidocaine
(which we have gotten information from a lot of different sources that it is
an unnecessary evil that we choose to avoid), it contains tea tree oil
(Melaleuca oil) and aloe, making it a natural choice for us.
BurnAid has people calling from all over the country and
a few other places in the world once they have tried it. They also have an
all natural antiseptic cream and an anti-itch cream using the same tea tree
oil (Melaleuca oil) that they use for the burn gel they manufacture that we will be adding
soon to our site, we have been using the antiseptic cream in many of the kits that we
have been selling with a great response.
The Acuband and the Sleep Band are two all natural
products that work using acupressure points. The Acuband works so well that the Acuband
has FDA approval and it is currently one of the few anti-nausea product that
are not drugs and has been working wonders
with chemo patients, as well as pregnant women with morning sickness.
We are woman owned and operated (with help from strong
men for the heavy lifting). We prefer to work with nice people, so if you
are smiling at some of my silliness, then that is a very good sign you are
probably one of those nice people we would enjoy working with and helping
you with your first aid needs. And if you are not smiling, give us a call
anyway. We have been known to get people to smile once they call and find out
how we can help with their first aid kit and supply situation. If you have a
deadline, let us know what it is and we will give you the honest answer if
we can do it in that time We do our best to meet everyone's deadlines, as we
understand that sometimes you just needed it YESTERDAY. Give us a chance to earn your smile. We think you
will be happy you did. But, hey, we are biased. :)
Thanks for the opportunity to let you get to "know"
us. We
look forward to working with you. If you have other questions, please feel
free to call us and if you want me to answer you directly you can e-mail me
directly at

Sincerely,
Debbie Hackett
